Vivienne Westwood exhibition at DeYoung
Sunday 11th March 2007

Fashion icon and iconoclast Vivienne Westwood has turned couture upside down and inside out during her 36 years in the business. From her beginnings in punk and bondage gear to her more recent asymmetrical tweed suits and mountainous fabric gowns, Westwood carries an innovation all her own. San Francisco's de Young museum, in Golden Gate Park, is fantastic in and of itself (be sure to tour the observation tower and pay keen attention to the Ruth Asawa wire sculptures by the elevators) but if you haven't made it there yet, the new Vivienne Westwood exhibition (and this stroke of great weather) is the perfect reason to go. More than 150 objects (from her personal collection and that of donors) make up this exhibit, showcasing her developing sense of structure and the way clothes relate to the body. From the street to the catwalk, Westwood's had an influence and this exhibition is a fascinating exploration of it.
