San Francisco Sweet Tooth

Sunday 29th July 2007

With all of the fabulous food possibilities in San Francisco, it's impossible for us to say which restaurants are our favorites let alone which desserts! Luckily, Bay Area Backroads recently featured San Francisco Magazine's Food and Wine Editor, Jan Newberry, who not only has a much more advanced palate than us, but is also much less indecisive about those deserving desserts. Feast your eyes on her undoubtedly delectable picks by watching the video here, or keep reading for a breakdown of her top 4:

Pot de Crème

According to Jan, this pot de creme at one of my fave restaurants, Town Hall, is far from light and delicate as this French dessert is known to be. Instead it comes in a huge bowl with a rich bottom layer of Scharffenberger chocolate custard and a second layer of thick butterscotch custard topped with butterscotch and chocolate shards. Um, yum.

Frozen Yogurt Sherbert

Jan recommends the frozen yogurt sherbert at this fantastic Jackson Square restaurant, the Greek influenced Kokkari. I have to admit, i'm usually more of a chocolate fan, but this tangy sherbert is topped with seasonal fruit (from concord grapes to blood oranges and plums), creating an irresistable combination.

Profiteroles

One of the best Italian spots in the Mission, Delfina has a great ambiance, a good-looking clientele (a friend of mine once saw actor Luke Wilson dining there) and apparently a fantastic french dessert. Jan says their profiterales, light crunchy pastry balls, are filled with coffee gelato and covered with hot chocolate sauce and candied almonds. Sounds like a triple threat.

Arm of a Gypsy

I must admit, I haven't been to this Spanish restaurant but after hearing about this dessert, it's on my to-do list. Bocadillos Arm of a Gypsy is a delicious spongecake filled with hazelnut mousse and topped with candied hazelnuts, Jan's favorite. That's one arm we'd like to gnaw on.

As far as we're concerned, you can't go wrong with dessert, but if you want to go better, here's a list to eat by. On a side note, we're pretty sure Jan Newberry has the best job in the world.
