Road trippers with an inkling for tinkering and a DIY mindset will want to head to San Mateo for the Maker Faire 2007, being held at the Fairgrounds May 19 & 20. Organized by MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a ground-breaking event that brings together science, art, craft and engineering in an intriguing, inspiring and fun-loving forum. The two-day family-friendly event celebrates all thing DIY and is geared toward creative folks who simply like to make things. Here are a few highlights to get you in gear:

Moonshine Powered Motors: Think alcohol's only for drinking? Think again! Learn how to produce your own alcohol auto fuel from ground corn and enzymes and how to convert your car to run on it!

The Woz: See Steve Wozniak, inventor of the Apple computer, get his brain picked on the main stage

and our favorite...

Swap-O-Rama-Rama: Bring a bag of used clothes and join the fun with this giant clothing swap and do-it-yourself workshops in which a community explores reuse and creativity through the recycling of used clothing. Expect thousands of pounds of free clothing, sewing stations operated by local designers who will teach you how to modify used clothing, on-site silkscreening and a recycled fashion show.

Click here to purchase tickets, then pack your bags and bring your curiosity on the road!

If you need a place to stay, check out the nearby Holiday Inn Express, always a good deal.
