Carmel Mission
Friday 27th July 2007

There are plenty of wonderful things to do in Carmel, but visiting the historic San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission, otherwise known as the Carmel Mission, should definitely make your short list. Founded in 1771 the mission is a breath-taking piece of California history whether you consider yourself the religious type or not. Run by Father Juniperro Serra, the Mission has been restored to a beautiful state with a replica of an early kitchen and an adjacent garden of poppies. You may recognize it from the climactic sequence in Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 mindbender Vertigo. But instead of chasing a confused blond up the bell tower to her death, you can stroll the grounds on a self-guided or docent-led tour, appreciate the Basilica's beauty and check out the several museums. The Mission is a working parish so you can also attend a Mass if you'd like. The Carmel Mission is open to the public Monday - Saturday from 9:30am to 5pm and on Sunday from 10:30am to 5pm. Admission is $5.
